VA Loans in Virginia
Virginia has a deep military footprint, and its constitution provides a property tax exemption for veterans with the most serious service-connected disabilities. The federal VA loan benefit is the same in every state: eligible buyers can buy with no down payment and competitive rates.
Virginia benefits for veterans
Property tax relief for veterans
Veterans rated by the VA as totally and permanently disabled from a service-connected condition may qualify for a full exemption from real estate taxes on the home they live in as their principal residence. A rating that is scheduled for future review doesn't qualify.
The exemption can continue for a surviving spouse who doesn't remarry. Under current rules, a surviving spouse who moves may be able to carry the exemption to a new principal residence in Virginia.
How to apply: Apply through the commissioner of the revenue or the real estate assessment office in your city or county.
Other housing-related benefits
- The surviving spouse of a service member who died in the line of duty may qualify for a full real estate tax exemption on their principal residence.
