VA Loans in Texas
Texas offers veterans both strong property tax relief and its own state-run home loan program, which is unusual among states. The federal VA loan benefit is the same in every state: eligible buyers can buy with no down payment and competitive rates.
Texas benefits for veterans
Property tax relief for veterans
Veterans who receive VA compensation at the total disability level, or who are rated individually unemployable, may qualify for a full exemption from property taxes on their residence homestead.
Veterans with a lower service-connected disability rating may qualify for a partial exemption, based on their rating, on any one property they own in Texas.
Unmarried surviving spouses may keep the full homestead exemption if the home was their primary residence when the veteran passed and still is. Unmarried surviving spouses of service members killed in the line of duty may also qualify for a full exemption on their residence homestead.
How to apply: Homestead exemptions are filed with the appraisal district in the county where the home is located.
Other housing-related benefits
- The Texas Veterans Land Board runs its own home loan and land loan programs for eligible Texas veterans and military members, separate from the federal VA loan.
- Disabled veterans whose home was donated by a charitable organization may qualify for a homestead exemption tied to their disability rating.
