VA Loans in Illinois
Illinois offers some of the most generous homestead relief in the Midwest for veterans with significant service-connected disabilities. The federal VA loan benefit is the same in every state: eligible buyers can buy with no down payment and competitive rates.
Illinois benefits for veterans
Property tax relief for veterans
The Standard Homestead Exemption for Veterans with Disabilities reduces the taxable value of a qualifying veteran's primary residence. The size of the reduction depends on the veteran's VA service-connected disability rating, and veterans with the highest ratings can be exempt from property taxes on their home altogether.
An unremarried surviving spouse can keep the exemption, and can even transfer it to a new primary residence after selling the original home.
How to apply: Apply with the chief county assessment office in the county where the home is located.

- The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs also maintains a housing resource page covering homeownership help and specially adapted housing for veterans.
