Property tax relief for veterans

Veterans who were honorably discharged with a service-connected total and permanent disability may qualify for a full exemption from property taxes on the home they own and live in. A similar full exemption is available to veterans who use a wheelchair because of a service-connected disability.

Veterans with a lower service-connected disability rating may qualify for a partial reduction in their property's assessed value, and this one isn't limited to a homestead.

Veterans age sixty-five or older with a permanent, service-connected disability may qualify for a discount on their homestead's assessed value that rises with their disability rating.

In many cases, a surviving spouse can carry these benefits over after the veteran's passing.

How to apply: Apply through the property appraiser's office in the county where the home is located.

Other housing-related benefits

• Service members can rent out their Florida homestead while away on duty without losing the homestead exemption, and next of kin with written authorization can file the homestead claim on their behalf.
• Service members deployed outside the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii in support of designated operations may qualify for a property tax exemption tied to the time they were deployed during the prior year.
